Global food-tech innovators like Corning Life Sciences and ScaleUp Bio are among those setting up shop. Inside a lab on the west coast of Singapore, the future of food production is being developed — or fermented, to be more precise. The company is ScaleUp Bio, a local contract development and manufacturing organization that provides submerged microbial and precision fermentation for food-tech startups. In the long term, this will reduce costs compared to traditional agricultural methods and help make food production more sustainable. Despite the sector's immediate funding challenges, Singapore is committed to being a consistent partner and helping companies with similar goals achieve success.

GENEVA (AP) — The new head of the U.N.'s migration agency said Monday that the private sector is “desperate” for their countries to take in migrants to mop up labor shortages, especially in the West — endeavoring to steer a narrative away from reticence and suspicion about migrants in many parts of the world. ”We hear from ... the private sector globally, but especially in Europe and in North America, that they are desperate for migration in order to meet their own labor market needs and in order to continue to fuel innovation within their own companies,” Pope, who is American, told reporters. Pope insisted that countries must ensure legal and proper “pathways” to migration, a longstanding call by U.N. institutions. Pope officially took over Sunday from Antonio Vitorino of Portugal, her former boss, whom she outlasted in a U.S.-vs.-European Union showdown earlier this year. The Geneva-based agency has only had two non-American directors-general since its founding in 1951, and today it brings together 175 member countries and more than 20,000 staff.

Heavy rains caused by Mediterranean storm Daniel caused deadly flooding across eastern Libya last weekend. He said prosecutors would investigate local authorities in the city, as well as previous governments. But there was no warning about the dams, which collapsed early Monday as most residents were asleep in their homes. The storm hit other areas in eastern Libya, including the towns of Bayda, Susa, Marj and Shahatt. Others had come to Libya to work or were traveling through in hopes of migrating to Europe.

It’s been a while since New York was the main character in any costume drama, a while since it starred as anything other than a problem: abandoned, messy, crime-ridden, economically challenged. But as New York Fashion Week began, the city’s designers were telling a different story. One about the city as a place of chaos, movement and dreams. “I was thinking about the inspiration that New York has given me, and it made me want to explore New York style archetypes, and my own personal New York style archetypes, from when I came to the city for my first job,” Stuart Vevers said in a preview before his lively 10th-anniversary Coach show, held in the heart of Midtown Manhattan at the New York Public Library. They were part of the New York of his mind, a place where people come from elsewhere (Mr. Vevers is British) and find their tribe, which isn’t necessarily defined by geography any more — by uptown or downtown, east or west — but rather by state of mind.

At the G20 summit, officials expressed a desire for a "just and durable peace" in Ukraine. But a statement on the war was ultimately watered down at Russia's request. The Kremlin is no longer described as waging a war "against" Ukraine. One shouldn't look to a G20 statement, written by the world's most powerful committee, for clarity or guidance on moral questions. The leading economies can all agree, however, that the sky is blue and what the Kremlin is doing "in" Ukraine is properly termed a "war."

On July 26, as a military coup was underway in the West African nation of Niger, the airwaves of Télé Sahel, the state television station, filled with upbeat music videos praising the military. Some of these videos had been circulating for years, but since a group of generals toppled the democratically elected president in July, Niger has witnessed a revival of both old and new military propaganda, now remixed for the TikTok era. Fear and respect toward the military are also deeply entrenched within the society, analysts said. It is not clear how many Nigeriens support the military takeover. Among throngs of men assembled in front of the country’s national assembly, the green and orange Nigerien flags, raised fists and defiant messages against Western countries provided an ideal backdrop for their new song, “Niger Guida,” or “Niger My Home” in the Hausa language.

Ukrainian troops trained by NATO say they are left underprepared for the war with Russia. They said their Western instructors don't have experience in fighting this kind of war. About 63,000 Ukrainian troops have been trained in the West — mostly in the UK and Germany, per the report. "Dutchman" said that while NATO training can be useful for things like shooting and learning to use equipment, most major combat training occurred in Ukraine. But due to time constraints, Ukrainian troops often don't reach those levels, Reynolds said.

Kremlin officials are concerned Kyiv is outflanking them diplomatically, The Moscow Times said. In comments to The Moscow Times, four former and current Kremlin officials familiar with Russia's diplomacy were troubled. A former high-ranking Russian diplomat also expressed concern to The Moscow Times about Russia's isolation, but added that Moscow's participation in discussions was necessary for ending the conflict. In recent months, Russia and Ukraine have intensified their struggle to for diplomatic support for their versions of ending the war. Ukraine hopes to persuade nations by pointing to the devastating effect of Russia's war of the grain exports many countries depend on.

A man takes picture at the harbour where Taiwanese Navy warships are anchored on August 07, 2022 in Keelung, Taiwan. Prominent China hawk Kyle Bass told CNBC on Tuesday that he believes Chinese President Xi Jinping is determined to "bring war to the West," with an invasion of Taiwan likely before the end of 2024. Bass, who is founder and chief investment officer at U.S. investment firm Hayman Capital Management, said that the West — and particularly Wall Street — is too preoccupied by the apparent economic unviability of such an attack. But, much like Russian President Vladimir Putin — whose war in Ukraine has isolated his country from the West — Xi is not solely concerned with the potential economic fallout, Bass said. "We on Wall Street love to think he would never do that because it doesn't make economic sense.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said Wagner troops are poised to infiltrate NATO territory. Over 100 mercenaries have gathered near Poland's border with Belarus, he said on Saturday. Morawiecki warned that the fighters could pose as migrants or border guards to try and sneak in. The Russian fighters are near Grodno, a Belarusian city 10 miles from the Polish border, Morawiecki said at a press conference in Gliwice. Polish officials have for years accused Belarus of attempting to overwhelm Poland's border forces by sending migrants west — a charge Minsk has denied.

It made no distinction between drug use and sales, or between marijuana and heroin. About 90 percent of those who were born at the peak of the baby boom have at least experimented with illegal drugs. Though by 1970 both parties agreed the Boggs Act had flopped, New York State’s moderate Republican governor, Nelson Rockefeller, didn’t take note of its ineffectiveness. In 1962, he had tried mandating lengthy periods of residential treatment for people with addiction. The sentencing was deliberately harsher than for rape or murder because drugs were seen as a crime against the whole community.

A brief, failed revolt by Russian mercenaries in June raised doubts about Putin's hold on power. It also worried officials in China, which has its own history with "warlords," a US official said. “This year, we are seeing a bit of a delay in the evolution into the monsoon thunderstorm season,” Mr. Frieders said. “And so with that, we ended up seeing temperatures a little bit hotter during the day.”The heat wave now stationed over the desert Southwest — caused by a “heat dome” of high pressure — has also brought sweltering temperatures to parts of Texas and New Mexico. Experts estimate that more than 50 million people across the United States live in the areas expected to have dangerous levels of heat. As Captain Noak spoke on Monday afternoon, the heat index in the city — a measure of how the air feels that takes into account both temperature and humidity — was climbing toward an expected high of 109 degrees. Norge Mining has discovered 77 billion tons of phosphate rock. The company's founder said it could satisfy global demand for fertilizer and EVs for 50 years. Russia is another leading producer of phosphate rock, but the war in Ukraine has disrupted trade. Norge Mining, which reportedly found the massive site in southwestern Norway in 2018, announced in May that it had discovered 77 billion tons worth of the mineral, according to The Economist. According to the OCP Group, a phosphate rock mining company, the rock is used to produce phosphorous, a key ingredient in fertilizers.
